Welcome everyone to class 14 and Year 6.

I am really enthusiastic about the new year ahead and meeting and getting to know all of you. We are bound to have a great year and making sure we have a fantastic last year of primary school before heading off to secondary school.

Year 6 is a wonderful challenge and I know that if we put in plenty of effort and try our best we will have a great year. As well as the work, year 6 is packed with opportunities for all of you to get your teeth into and will be lots of fun.

I hope you are excited and ready to have a brilliant time in year six and I'm looking forward to getting started.

In Autumn 1 (Start date 06-09-22) we will be starting some new and exciting learning and I'd like to share with you an overview of what the children will be learning.

We will be looking at the fascinating history of Britain and gaining an understanding of what happened and the events that transpired between the Anglo-Saxons and the Vikings and the struggle for power.

In science we will be looking at Evolution and Inheritance , we will be looking at Charles Darwin's theory of Evolution and natural selection  and adaptation.

In maths we will be looking at the four operations of number, place value, fractions, decimals and percentages.

In English we will be starting the term by looking at writing informal letters and looking at grammar features that are genre specific and how to incorporate these within our writing. We will also be completing lots of reading and start looking at the way in which SAT's style questions can be approached.

P.E. is golf this half term so please send children to school in appropriate P.E. kit on Tuesdays. Also swimming is on Friday mornings so children will need to bring a swimming costume (swimming shorts/trunks for boys and a one piece costume for girls) and a towel. Goggles and swimming hats are optional.

Homework is vital at this time of year and will help the children to learn. The children will be given weekly spellings to learn on a Monday, in addition to this they will be given English and Maths homework each Wednesday to be completed by Friday. Children will also be expected to read at least once each week and reading books will be changed by Mr Brown on a Wednesday.

Another skill we would like children to be working on is their fluency with their times tables, especially those who feel they are not fully confident in this area, as this skill will be incredibly beneficial when sitting Maths SAT's papers.

If there is ever an occasion where we need to move to remote learning, Class Dojo will be used to communicate with parents and pupils and this system will also be used for other communication with parents. It will be up and running shortly. You do not need to do anything as this will be handled in school and you will receive a message via dojo that was used last year in year 5 to notify you when it is up and running. However, there is also the starred section below with work in different subject areas from the year 6 curriculum.

Some useful information.

Current start time is 8.50am

Current finish time is 3.20pm

P.E. is on a Tuesday afternoon so can children come to school on that day wearing their P.E. kits. (We will try to do outdoor P.E. whenever possible and will not be using cloakrooms to get changed.) Please can children come to school on Tuesdays wearing P.E. kits - dark coloured shorts and a white t-shirt with suitable footwear - trainers or pumps. When we are outdoors, children can also wear tracksuit bottoms / joggers / leggings that are dark coloured, and wear their school jumper or cardigan. Children can bring a different long sleeved top for warmth whilst doing the P.E. lesson outside if they want to.

We are able to go swimming this year and this will take place on Fridays. Please can children bring a swimming costume. Can girls wear a one piece swimming costume, (no bikinis) and can boys wear trunks or swimming shorts that are either tight fitting (like cycling shorts) or have net lining. (If children choose to come to school on Friday wearing their costumes under their uniform, please ensure underwear is packed for when children exit the pool and return to school.)

If you have any questions or if I have missed anything that you want to know about, please feel free to contact me through class dojo or via the school office phone number.

Thank you.

Kind regards,
Mr Morton.
