Welcome everyone to class 14 and Year 6.

I am really enthusiastic about the new year ahead and meeting and getting to know all of you. We are bound to have a great year and making sure we have a fantastic last year of primary school before heading off to secondary school.

Year 6 is a wonderful challenge and I know that if we put in plenty of effort and try our best we will have a great year. As well as the work, year 6 is packed with opportunities for all of you to get your teeth into and will be lots of fun.

I hope you are excited and ready to have a brilliant time in year six and I'm looking forward to getting started.

Newsletter.

In Spring 2 (Start date 28-02-22) we will be starting some new and exciting learning and I'd like to share with you an overview of what the children will be learning.

Our topic this term is Benin. We will be looking at the fascinating history of this country and gaining an understanding of what happened and the events that transpired.

In science we will be looking at electricity, we will be constructing circuits and drawing circuit diagrams learning the symbols that are used and looking at what factors and controls can be manipulated within a circuit.

In maths we will be looking at lots of past SAT's papers and working on any areas that come up that we need to practice before May.

In English we will be starting the term by looking at Non-chronological reports. World book day is just around the corner too so that is something to look forward to.

P.E. is athletics this half term so please continue to send children to school in appropriate P.E. kit on a Thursday. Also swimming is continuing on Fridays.

Homework is vital at this time of year and will help the children to learn in the run up to the SAT's tests. The children will be given weekly spellings to learn on a Monday, in addition to this they will be given English and Maths homework each Wednesday to be completed by Friday.

Another skill we would like children to be working on is their fluency with their times tables, especially those who feel they are not fully confident in this area, as this skill will be incredibly beneficial when sitting Maths SAT's papers.

If children would like to do any research into the history of Benin and bring it into school to share with us that would be lovely.

If there is ever an occasion where we need to move to remote learning, Class Dojo will be used to communicate with parents and pupils and this system will also be used for other communication with parents. It will be up and running shortly. However, there is also the starred section below with work in different subject areas from the year 6 curriculum.

Some useful information.

Current start time is 8.50am

Current finish time is 3.20pm

P.E. is on a Thursday afternoon so can children come to school on that day wearing their P.E. kits. (We will try to do outdoor P.E. whenever possible and will not be using cloakrooms to get changed.) Please can children come to school on Thursdays wearing P.E. kits - dark coloured shorts and a white t-shirt with suitable footwear - trainers or pumps. When we are outdoors, children can also wear tracksuit bottoms / joggers / leggings that are dark coloured, and wear their school jumper or cardigan. Children can bring a different long sleeved top for warmth whilst doing the P.E. lesson outside if they want to.

We are able to go swimming this year and this will take place on Fridays. Please can children bring a swimming costume which should be  dark coloured. Can girls wear a one piece swimming costume, (no bikinis) and can boys wear trunks or longer shorts that are tight fitting, (no baggy/bermuda shorts) please. Children will also be required to wear a swimming hat (boys and girls) and bring a towel. Children can bring goggles if they wish, but these are optional. (If children choose to come to school on Friday wearing their costumes under their uniform, please ensure underwear is packed for when children exit the pool and return to school.)

If you have any questions or if I have missed anything that you want to know about, please feel free to contact me through class dojo or via the school office phone number.

Thank you.

Kind regards,
Mr Morton.
